Single Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings

What are Single Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings?

The cylindrical roller bearings consist of straight geometry for outer ring, inner ring and roller. The cage can be polyamide, steel or brass. The inner and outer rings are separable. These bearings can accommodate high radial loads as the roller makes a line contact with the raceway. The bearings are available in a variety of designs & sizes. Different types of bearings are designated as NU, NJ, NUP, N, NF and NH for single row bearings, depending on the flange on inner or outer rings.

Features of Single Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Based on the type of single row cylindrical bearing, the features will differ marginally. Broadly, here are the features of each type:

NU Type:

  • Outer ring comes with flange on both sides and the inner ring is without flange.
  • The bearing can take radial load and no axial load. They are used as floating bearings.
  • The outer components along with rollers and cage forms the outer assembly.
  • The outer and inner assembly can be mounted separately.

NJ Type:

  • Inner ring comes with flange on both sides and the outer ring is without flange.
  • The bearing can take radial load and no axial load. They are used as floating bearings.
  • The inner components along with rollers and cage forms the inner assembly.
  • The outer and inner assembly can be mounted separately.

N Type:

  • Outer ring comes with a flange on both sides and the inner ring has one side flange.
  • The bearing can take radial load and axial load on one side only.
  • Can be used as a fixed or floating bearings

NF Type:

  • Inner ring comes with a flange on both sides and the outer ring has one side flange.
  • The bearing can take radial load and axial load on one side only.
  • Can be used as a fixed or floating bearings
  • NH Type: (Combination of NJ + NH)
  • Outer ring comes with a flange on both sides and the inner ring has one side flange.
  • L shaped collar rests on the inner outer diameter
  • The bearing can take radial load and axial load in both directions
  • Widely used as a fixed side bearing

NUP Type:

  • Outer ring comes with a flange on both sides and the inner ring has one side flange.
  • Collar is fixed on the inner ring flange less side
  • The bearing can take radial load and axial load in both directions
  • Widely used as a fixed side bearing

Advantages of Single Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings

  • The design is optimized to ensure low friction and reduced edge stresses at the roller/raceway contact area.
  • Open flange and roller end design, along with surface finish, promotes formation of a lubricant film which translates lower friction and higher axial load carrying capacity.
  • The roller profile is sensitive to misalignment and shaft deflection, ensuring longevity of bearings and minimal maintenance.
  • The surface finish supports the formation of a hydrodynamic lubricant film which ensures speed and performance is sustainable over the long run.
  • The separable components of the bearing facilitates mounting and dismounting with minimal maintenance & inspection efforts.
  • The cage design helps sustain peak load at rapid accelerations throughout applications..
