What are Four Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings?

Four row cylindrical roller bearings are designed to enhance the capabilities of cylindrical roller bearings. They usually come in two primary variants: one with a cylindrical or tapered bore and the other which is either opened or sealed. 

These are extensively used in specific industries where it helps the roll necks of rolling mill stands, and in the paper industry for calendars and roller presses. Since these are mounted using an interference fit, four-row cylindrical roller bearings are ideal for rolling mill applications. This interference fit at the roller neck ensures high speed seamless operations. These work well with bearings which provide axial loads since it can only accommodate radial loads.

Features of Four Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings

The features of a four row cylindrical roller bearing are similar to the double row variant. It only enhances the productivity and load bearing capacity of the bearing. 

  • Cylindrical roller bearings in which there are four flanges are capable of unidirectional load. 
  • The bearings are designed for very heavy load capacity due to the increased number of rollers. 
  • With optimised design, stress distribution is uniform and edge loading is minimised.
  • The separable parts are interchangeable for enhanced productivity.

Most of the advantages of a four row cylindrical roller bearings are similar to double row cylindrical roller bearings. It amplifies the major benefits, such as: 

  • It has an exceptionally high load carrying capacity compared to other cylindrical bearings. The extra rollers help carry extra load. 
  • Low friction smooth operations since the bearing also has a self lubricating feature where it develops a hydrodynamic film around an open flange design. 
  • The logarithmic multi-roller profile substantially lowers edge stresses at contact areas due to its sensitivity to misalignment and raceway shaft deflection.
  • It shows enhanced operational reliability owing to the hardened surface finish on contact surface
  • Separable and interchangeable components facilitate easy mounting, dismounting, and  maintenance
  • Despite the load these ensure the operations achieve a high speed rapid acceleration at peak loads.
  • The bearings are relatively large roll neck diameters against roll diameter.
