What are Double Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings?

The cylindrical roller bearings consist of straight geometry for outer ring, inner ring and roller. The cages can be made of either polyamide, steel or even brass based on the application and utility. The inner and outer rings are separable. These bearings can accommodate high radial loads as the roller makes a line contact with the raceway. The bearings are available in a variety of designs & sizes. Different types of bearings are designated as NNU and NN for double row bearings, depending on the inner or outer flange sizes of the bearing rings.

Features of Double Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings

The features and utility of the bearing will depend on the type of double row cylindrical bearing. Broadly, here are the features of each type: 

NNU Type:

  • Two flanges on the inner ring, no flanges on the outer ring
  • High on precision and designed to accommodate heavy radial loads at high speed. 
  • Provides high degree of stiffness due to hardened surface 
  • Helps allocate axial displacement in either direction.
  • The components are separable which makes it ideal for seamless mounting and dismounting.

NN Type:

  • Two flanges on the outer ring, no flanges on the inner ring
  • Also designed to accommodate heavy radial loads at high speed. 
  • Provides high degree of stiffness due to hardened surface 
  • Helps allocate axial displacement in either direction. 
  • Separable assembly components ideal for seamless mounting and dismounting.

Some cylindrical bearings have no flange on either the inner or the outer ring. So the rings move axially relative to each other. These can be used as floating bearings. Cylindrical roller bearings in which either inner or outer rings have two flanges on both sides, and the other ring has one, are capable of some load in one direction. The bearings are designed for maximum load capacity. With optimised design, stress distribution is uniform and edge loading is minimised. The separable parts are interchangeable. This is particularly applicable in case of double row bearings.

Advantages of Double Row Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Most of the advantages of a double row cylindrical roller bearing are attributed to that of all cylindrical roller bearings. However, with double rows it amplifies the benefits, such as: 

  • Enhanced radial load carrying capacity of applications
  • Very high strength and surface rigidity which ensures high running accuracy
  • Sturdy and reliable bearing which minimises noise, vibration and overall heat generation.
  • Accommodated either side axial displacement in both directions eliminates misalignment.
  • Lubrication feature ensures longevity of bearings and sustainable speed.
  • Thin section enables compact application design for easy mounting and dismounting.
